When my son was first diagnosed with ADHD, we were only given one treatment option – medication.
So when the medication created significant side effects for my son, I felt like I had no other options. It was either medication (with side effects that were in some ways worse than the ADHD itself) or it was nothing.
Sadly, since becoming a board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, specializing in working with families of children with ADHD, I’ve heard this same story over and over again from other families.
Parents are oftentimes not given information about ANY effective strategies outside of medication.
Instead they are offered stimulants such as Ritalin or Adderall right off the bat.
They aren’t told that some people with ADHD have found that natural strategies can help them manage their symptoms without relying on medication.
One natural strategy that has been shown to be effective in reducing ADHD symptoms is dietary changes.
Many people with ADHD have food sensitivities, which can trigger symptoms such as hyperactivity, irritability, and inattention.
Common trigger foods include gluten, dairy, soy, and artificial colors and flavors.
Eliminating these trigger foods from the diet and focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods can help reduce inflammation in the body and, in turn, improve brain function.
In addition to dietary changes, optimizing detoxification can also be beneficial for managing ADHD symptoms.
Detoxification refers to the process of eliminating toxins from the body, which can build up over time and interfere with normal bodily functions.
Many people with ADHD have impaired detoxification pathways, which can contribute to symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, and irritability.
Natural strategies such as drinking plenty of water, eating fiber-rich foods, exercising, and taking supplements can help support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Other natural strategies that can be helpful for managing ADHD symptoms include exercise, meditation, and targeted supplementation.
Exercise is known to improve brain function and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, which often co-occur with ADHD. Meditation can help reduce stress and improve focus and attention. Certain herbs and supplements have been shown to improve cognitive function and memory in people with ADHD.
These strategies, along with various others, are things we teach families in our ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids program.
One of these families recently shared with me that she was able to work with her child’s doctor to get her son off of all ADHD medication.
“6 days ago we decided to give no ADHD meds a shot…” she told me.
When I got this Facebook message from Sarah, I got tears in my eyes.
I remember this day so well for my own son…the day we took him off his ADHD meds.
It was a day that, years before, I honestly didn’t think would ever come. But now, he’s been off medication for YEARS, and we will never go back.
Now, I’m not against medication. There is definitely a time and a place for it.
But sometimes I wonder…what would happen if families tried some natural strategies first?
Would medication still be needed?
And even if it is still needed, is it possible that a lower dose would work once the inflammation is reduced in the body?
I don’t know what’s holding you back from implementing natural strategies to reduce ADHD symptoms.
Maybe it’s finances. Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s doubt that this will really work.
But it works. I’ve seen it in over 1000 families.
When families clean up their diet, optimize detoxification, target those underlying stressors, and implement other natural strategies that I teach in my course, things begin to improve.
And sometimes, like with Sarah, things improve so much that meds fall by the wayside.*
