Natural Remedies for Constipation

by | Jan 9, 2023 | ADHD Co-existing Conditions, ADHD Symptoms, Natural Solutions

Many families come to me with questions about constipation.

“Is Miralax okay on a regular basis? What are some natural remedies? Is constipation normal for kids?”

In this post, I’ll answer those questions!

First of all, here’s my professional opinion about Miralax:

Yes, it might help with constipation because it works by attracting water to the stool so it can pass more easily.

BUT…

What frustrates me is that it is never going to get to the underlying stressor that is causing the constipation in the first place!

Additionally, there are other, safer options to try instead. I will share a few of those below.

Here are some things to think about in regard to constipation.

Key Truths about Constipation:

Constipation is NOT normal.

So many people act like it’s normal for a child to be constipated. It’s NOT!

So instead of going first to medication, think about what might be causing the constipation.

What is the child’s diet like? Could there be a food sensitivity? Is the child eating gluten and dairy?

Begin by cleaning up the diet and  getting rid of gluten and dairy. That alone might be enough to get the constipation under control!

Constipation means there is likely something deeper going on in the gut that is CAUSING the constipation.

Using Miralax will not help you figure out what’s causing the constipation in the first place.

There are sometimes significant side effects associated with Miralax.

Ask questions. Do the research. Don’t just blindly trust your doctor if they are suggesting this without exploring other possible options too.

There are LOTS of natural remedies for constipation.

I’m not against medication, and it certainly has its place.

But it should NOT be the first port of call with mild constipation. Not when there are so many other options that are much safer.

Natural Remedies for Constipation:
1. Begin by cleaning up the diet and cutting out gluten and dairy.

Did you know that constipation can be linked to food sensitivities?

Many families that I work with find that constipation resolves itself once they clean up the diet!

Don’t believe me?

2. Magnesium Citrate has been shown to improve constipation as well.

3. Castor Oil Packs can also be really helpful.

4. Increase water intake. This alone can be life-changing for many people!

5. Increase exercise. Getting the body moving can also be really helpful in getting the bowels moving.

6. Finally, if magnesium citrate, castor oil packs, and these other natural strategies don’t work, I often recommend Oxy Powder

If constipation is part of  your life or your child’s life, there are so many things you can do!

Like Dara, just changing the diet might be enough to give you SIGNIFICANT RELIEF!

But if that alone doesn’t do it, try some of the other tips in this post, and let me know how you go!

*Sometimes, there might be hidden stressors causing constipation that diet alone can’t correct. That’s when functional lab testing can be beneficial. If you want to know more about this, check out this video
