Advice from An Educator – To Parents of Kids with ADHD

by | Sep 3, 2022 | ADHD Symptoms, Natural Remedies, Parenting

Can you imagine being a child in a classroom where you feel like the teacher or educator doesn’t like you?

That’s exactly how one mom told me her ADHD son felt at school.

Like he wasn’t good enough.

Like he was a problem to be solved.

Like he was difficult.

Many parents of kids with ADHD have experienced similar challenges in traditional school settings.

That’s because most traditional schools are not designed for neurodiverse children.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Many teachers and educators do an amazing job with neurodiverse children. I have had the pleasure of working with MANY wonderful teachers.

But the school setting itself is not typically ideal for kids with ADHD and other similar disorders.

I think that’s why moms like Kristen (and the many more I have talked with who share similar stories) worry about their kids with ADHD.

They can tell that their children aren’t thriving at school, and they wonder what they can do to help make things better.

If you can relate, keep reading this post for encouragement and advice from one of my favorite educators!

Advice from an Educator – To Parents of Kids with ADHD

Our newest Soaring Child interview actually made me get tears in my eyes.

This interview with April Tierney is SO POWERFUL.

April is a life-long educator with a Master’s degree in education and more than 17 years of teaching experience at many different age levels. April understands children diagnosed as ADHD and is known for her energetic and interactive teaching style.

As a passionate educator, she is skilled at meeting kids at their unique ability and maturity levels and has advice on how to keep your curious child engaged in their academics without getting left behind.

Instead of trying to force kids to fit the mold, April advocates that we change the mold.

I LOVE this quote April shared:

“If we plant a flower, and it doesn’t thrive, we don’t blame the flower…We look at the conditions the flower is living in…”

And it’s the same way with our children. If they aren’t thriving at school, then we don’t blame the child.

Instead, we look around at that child’s surroundings and see what changes we can make so that the conditions are more suited to meet their unique needs.

You DO NOT want to miss this powerful interview where April shares critical advice for parents of kids with ADHD.

Here are some of the highlights:

✔️ Instead of trying to force children to fit the mold, let’s change the mold!

✔️ To help children with ADHD in the classroom, incorporate more movement, choices, humor, etc. into the school setting.

✔️ Exercise is a critical component for all children, but especially for children with ADHD.

✔️ Being outdoors is also an integral piece of a healthy lifestyle for children with ADHD.

✔️ If the educational system your child is currently in is not working, don’t be afraid to explore other options (like virtual schooling, homeschooling, coops, smaller schools, etc).
