For parents of kids with ADHD, self-care often falls to the bottom of the to-do list.
I know, because I’m a mom of a child with ADHD. And for years, I put myself last.
I paid for that mistake too – with ADHD attacks, extreme exhaustion, and constant feelings of overwhelm.
One day, though, I read this quote by Brianna Wiest, and it made such a huge difference in the way I approached my everyday life.
“True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.” – Brianna Wiest.
Wow, right?!
I LOVE THIS!!
If you can afford a day at the spa or a weekend away, great! But that’s not what it’s all about.
Self-care – true self care – is about creating a life you don’t need to escape from.
It’s about creating moments each and every day that help you NOT need to get away in the first place.
It’s about taking walks outside every morning with your dog because that’s what invigorates you.
It’s about taking 5 minutes and reading a book (a book YOU want to read for fun…not to get more tips and tricks on how to handle your child’s ADHD).
It’s about doing whatever YOU need to do to enjoy your life…every day of it.
So that made me really think, what do I need to do every single day so that I don’t feel like I need to escape my regular life?
I didn’t want to be the type of person who was living for the next vacation or the next day at the spa. I wanted to enjoy my life NOW.
So that’s when I started doing these things that really helped me take care of myself each day so I felt better and didn’t want to escape my life.
- I started drinking more water. I know that seems like a small thing, but it can make such a huge difference in the way your body feels each day.
- I started eating right. Like drinking water, this made a big difference in my mood and emotional well-being.
- I became intentional about spending time with people who made me feel understood and loved.
And on this same token, I also was intentional about NOT spending time with people who depleted me. We become like those we are around the most, so I wanted to surround myself with people who I admired. - I started spending more time outdoors when I could. Sunshine is SO beneficial for us, and the best way to get that vitamin D that our bodies need is to get outside and soak it up!
- I set a bedtime and stuck with it.
Sleep is an integral part of emotional well-being. When I wasn’t getting enough rest, I was – put bluntly – a grump. So I set an alarm on my phone for 9 PM each night to shut off the device and begin winding down for bed. This helped so much! - Finally, I started making time each and every day (or at least every few days) for things that I love doing.
So now I want to know from you, what are some of your favorite things to do? Tell me in the comments.
