My Favorite Protein Powders as an ADHD Practitioner

by | Sep 6, 2021 | Natural Remedies, Parenting

Every protein powder I have ever tried has had a chalky taste, and my kids just won’t drink it!

This is one of the common complaints I receive from parents. They want to incorporate protein powder into their child’s diet, but haven’t been able to find one their children actually like.

That’s why I wanted to share some of my favorite brands of protein powder.

Before I share that list, though, I want to explain a little bit about why protein powders are so great to incorporate into a child’s diet.

What is Protein Powder?

Proteins are long chains of amino acids and are the building blocks of every single cell in your body. A complete protein is made of at least 9 essential amino acids that you can only obtain through diet. Your body can’t make them on its own. These complete proteins are found in foods derived from animal sources, such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy.

What about Collagen Powder?

Collagen powder, though similar in appearance to complete protein powder, is actually a different type of protein. It is not complete, because it doesn’t have all 9 essential amino acids. Instead, it contains other nonessential amino acids like glycine, prolin, and hydroxyproline, which are also vital to your overall health.

So which is better?

Actually both. Your body needs both types of protein, so I typically suggest that families rotate: one day using collagen, the next using a complete protein powder, etc.

Variety is key to a healthy body!

It is important to obtain both proteins as they are both beneficial. Proteins from an animal source help to build and repair your body, whereas collagen protein is necessary for your skin, hair, nails, gut barrier (which is especially important for our kids who often have broken down guts!), bones, and connective tissues to stay strong, healthy, and flexible.

Think of protein like “glue” that holds your entire body together. Without it, your body cannot function at its best.

And with so many great options, it really is an easy way to get essential nutrients into your child’s body! Here are a few of my favorite brands.
