Why It’s Vital to Celebrate Small Wins When Reducing ADHD Symptoms Naturally?

A mother celebrating small wins as she seeks to reduce ADHD symptoms in her child

One of the hardest battles I had to fight after changing my family’s diet to reduce my son’s ADHD symptoms was a battle in my mind. I had made big changes in our family, so I expected big results. And I expected them fast!

I found myself feeling very discouraged anytime my son had a meltdown and thinking things like,

“Why isn’t this working yet?!”

“He’s still struggling…even after all the changes we made!”

I even thought about throwing in the towel and giving up!

What I didn’t know then was that sometimes it can take 3 to even 12 months for gluten to stop reacting in someone’s body, especially if that person has already developed antibodies to gluten (which is unfortunately very common in our compromised kids).

Changing my son’s diet didn’t get rid of his ADHD symptoms immediately. It was a process that took time and patience.

His behavior was improving, but since he still struggled, I didn’t see the improvements. I only saw the struggles.

When I focused only on where I wanted him to be, I failed to see how far he had already come.

That’s why it’s crucial that we celebrate the small wins in our family’s journey.

Did your son eat broccoli for the first time? Celebrate that!

Did your daughter agree to taste a new food without a fight? That’s a win!

Did your child go all morning without throwing a fit…when they normally couldn’t even go an hour? Don’t focus on the fit in the afternoon; focus on the morning that was fit-free. That’s a win!

Choosing to look for and celebrate the small wins gives you the boost to keep going in this journey.

You might not be where you want to be YET…but you’re making progress, and that is worth celebrating.
